The Name The name derives from the ancient Volscian or Osco-Samnite town, then became the Roman town Bovillae because of the cult of the god Bove (Bovis Villae = city of ox). The adjective Ernica was added when the name changed in 1907 to be distinguished from another town with the same name and also to underline the relationship with the Ernici, an ancient people of Lazio. The name of the village was Bauco, from the Middle Ages and until the 1907, deriving from baculus that probably designated the landowner’s name; it also could derive from the word Buca (“hole”) due to the presence of holes (or caves) in the soil.
