The name
The name derives from the name of a noble Roman Family “the Gens Naevia” who possessed the town.

History
&9632;100 b.c. Neive was an important Roman settlement traversed by Via Aemilia Scauri road constructed in 100 b.c. by the Consul Emilio of Scauro.
■100 - 300 ad. Roman rule over our land occured during the 1st century B.C. and the 3rd century A.D. Successively, Neive as well as the other Roman provinces suffered the Barbarian invasions.
■Medieval era, around the year 1000 a fortified castle was constructed on the highest hill to defend against the Saracens, ancient documents spoke of “Oppidum Nevearum”.
On the left bank of the Tinella stream in Santa Maria del Piano area, the first settlement of Benedictine Monks appeared. These monks came from the Cathedral of S. Benigno Canadese, and established the monastery on the remains of a temple devoted to Diana.
The first building consisted in one room or ‘cell’ and then a granary (agricultural farm) was added at a later date. This monastery, that housed up to 100 monks still conserves its splendid Romanesque tower and the adjacent Sacristy.
Around the year 1190, Neive was part of a “Comune Consortile” (Communal Syndicate) along with the villages of Barabresco, Trezzo , S.Sisto, Neviglie and S.Maria del Piano.
■1200 – 1700 Since the year 1200 the towns of Alba and Asti contended for the Province of Neive. After that Neive and Asti passed under Visconti rule (1387-1512), then to the King of France, followed by Emperor Carlo V and finally to the House of Savoia.
The most antique note dated on the 16th of May 1564, is conserved in thel archives of the Municipality.
■In 1800 With the arrival of the French Revolution, Neive became part of the Napoleonic Empire and in a document dated the 8th of July 1800 the Town Council was called Municipality and the Mayor and the Town Hall were called by the French names “Maire” and “Marie”. This jurisdiction was finished on the 30th of June 1814, and Neive returned under the Savioas dominion.
■In 1834 The population of Neive reaches a total of over 3000 inhabitants.
■In 1865 On the 15th of May 1865 the railway station of Neive was inaugurated with the passing of the first train to Alba. This event lead to the subsequent urban development of Neive Borgonuovo.
&
9632;In 1879 The town administration bought the spinning-mill building in order to transform it into offices and the primary school which is still in use today.

The red roofed houses of a small antique village
As in the “Città Invisibili” (Invisible Towns), by Italo Calvino the lost grace of many places in the Italian province can today only be found in old postcards, where everything seems much more beautiful than it is today.

Neive too has been invaded by cement, but the historical centre that encircles the antique refuge, has fortunately remained. The castle no longer exists but the medieval town plan still remains with its red-roofed houses huddled together. The heights of the historical centre, offer a splendid view of the surrounding vineyards. Being a land of great wines you must take a trip to visit one of the wine producers in the area, often found in extravagant buildings, like the 18th century Conti di Castelborgo, whose wine cellar is bursting with lavish decorations and period furniture. The entrance to the magnificent garden of this ‘petit château ‘, closed in behind the southern walls of the town, is a monumental masterpiece of the Neivese architect Giovanni Antonio Borgese (1751). Although the building has not remained intact, you can still see three of its arches with double columns and a valuable wrought iron gateway crowned by the coat of arms of Castelborgo. The same architect created the Arciconfraternita of San Michele constructed between 1759 and 1789 in Baroque Sabaudo style with a single aisle and a high central dome. Curiously, the doorway of the church is carved with revolutionary human rights symbols.

The oldest residence in the village is Casa Cotto, which has origins in the 13th century. It was a strong hold belonging to a rich family of bankers. It also possessed one tower which has been cut. The building has magnificent ceilings and fireplaces and during the restoration in the archiway of the main entrance, bricks from the Roman era were found. Torre dell’Orgolio (1224), is also of the same period and was constructed under the dominion of the Province of Asti.

In the wall you will find a Roman memorial plaque dedicated to Valeria Terza by her husband Caio Aelio. Still older, is the Monastery Tower (10th century), in Romanesque style with a square plan with two “ordini di monofore” on each side and the five storeys of the building delineated by bowed arches. This is all that remains of the Benedectine Monastery called Santa Maria del Piano, that can be found on the road to Mango. This same monastery was under the subordination of the “Abbazia di Fruttuaria of San Benigno Canadese” Cathedral. Amongst the sacred buildings of Neive, the two 16th century chapels dedicated to San Rocco and San Sebastiano, stand out. The San Rocco Chapel has a particular, rectangular plan with a portico and bell tower and is situated just outside the southern walls in front of an arch. The arch was one of the two entranceways to the town that today connects Casa Demaria (16th century), with the Castle of Castelborgo. The chapel was reconstructed in 1783 by the Borgese but conserves the original, central part of the building.

A small artistic jewel, saved from ruins by its current owners, is Casa Bongioanni projected by the same Borgese architect (1750), rich with frescos, decorations and plaster embellishments that were typical of that period.

Those interested in seeing a wonderful example of 20th century art, should visit the new cemetery (just a short distance away from the historical centre), where the “Cappella Riccardi Candiani” Chapel lies. It was constructed in the 20’s in Neo-Gothic style and is the work of the Torinese sculptor Carlo Biscarra. The facade is inspired by the Duomo di Chivasso Cathedral and is decorated in terracotta in an elegant combination of gothic and art nouveau style. Inside the church, composed of one aisle, you will find the frescos of C. Ferro Milone and the tombs of the Counts of Castelborgo family.

Local Products
The Barbaresco wine that fills your goblets with its garnet red colour and orange hue is not the only blessed fruit of this land.

Neive does not live on wine only (even though it would be more than enough, in light of the quality and abundance), but also makes sweet-tasting salamis with the aroma of Barbaresco, produced in the swine farms dotted all over the region.

They also produce a Piemontese IGP liqueur called “Nocciola” with a refined flavour and aroma, another splendid crop of the Langa. In this small hillside district between Langhe and Monferrato the precious “Tartufo of Alba” also grows.

Local dishes
The Gastronomic experience in Neive verges on the sublime with the vast choice ; bagna caôda, tajarin al tartufo, carne cruda all’albese (rare cooked meat), coniglio al civèt (rabbit), torta di nocciole (hazelnut cake), zabaione al moscato (Zabaione with Nutmeg).

If dining in large numbers the “Fritto Misto alla Piemontese” (assortment of deep-fried food) is ideal and is an abundant second course served as a main course. To arouse your taste buds try the “Fonduta con Sfoglie di Tartufo Bianco”.
